SAN
Several categories:

• FC: Block storage, FC. Dedicated switches.
• FCoE: FC signalling over Ethernet protocol.
• iSCSI: Still block storage but cheaper version. Encapsulated on Ethernet frames

NAS: File server. File oriented. Less efficient

SDS (Software defined storage) This is aiming see all the individual storage in the nodes (e.g.: local disks on blade servers) as a unique aggregated pool of storage. From the virtualization perspective, the VSA (virtual storage appliance ) captures any request for the storage from the guests and redirects to the 'pool of storage'
